The Maldives' Education Management Information System With support from UNICEF, the Maldives Ministry of Education is using OpenEMIS to monitor progress on its Out-of-School Children Initiative.
The Republic of Maldives, composed of 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean, is one of the most geographically dispersed countries in the world. Developing nation-wide systems to distribute information, services and support across the territory is a high priority for the national government. In 2015, the Maldives Ministry of Education embarked on a project to replace its existing Education Management Information System (EMIS) with a new system that is fully government-owned. Initiated as a response to changing needs in the education system, the project encourages information dissemination and evidence-based planning to achieve stronger outcomes. A custom-built Early Warning Tracking System systemically seeks out out-of-school children, as part of the global Out-of-school Children Initiative (OOSCI) led by UNICEF and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. Capacity building measures and data analytics trainings will help the government update and manage the new system from year to year, and encourage education planners to integrate data in their decision making.
